Washcloth Turkey!

Washcloth Turkey

TerryGami, 15 Cloth Toy and Ornament Projects for Crafters, Teachers, and Children

The book is now available in soft cover!
The book is available at:

The turkey is known in some Native Indian cultures as the “Give Away Eagle.”  A person with turkey as his totem (or trait) possesses selfless generosity and would gladly give away all that he has to help the people in his tribe.  Perhaps we should remember this next time we all sit down to a Thanksgiving dinner.

When making the TerryGami washcloth turkey, remember that it can be made in all white washcloths, too.  The white, domesticated turkey originated in Mexico. This is in the book under turkey factoids.  To give your turkey extra character, you may add a pilgrim hat.  As we get closer to Thanksgiving, I will try to put a pattern on the website for a small pilgrim hat to fit the turkey’s head.

Another suggestion would be to make the turkey to match your décor.  If you want to set the turkey on a stack of towels in your guest bathroom, his feathers can be any color.  As adults, we don’t always think outside of the box when it comes to color, but a pink, purple, green and white turkey might be gorgeous.  Let's just hope people don't think he's a peacock!  A pilgrim hat will dispel this notion as a possibility.

Washcloth Bats - Austin Bat Festival!

TerryGami Washcloth Bat
TerryGami, 15 Cloth Toy and Ornament Projects for Crafters, Teachers, and Children

The book is now available in paperback!
The book is available at:

I just recently learned that Austin, Texas has two bat festivals every year!  To learn more, here are a couple of links:  http://www.real-austin-texas.com/austin-bats.html and http://www.roadwayevents.com/RoadStar/Events-cat.asp?media1Id=1323.  Austin named the Mexican Free-Tailed Bat as its' official animal. If I had I known,  I would have put that in the Factoids in the book, so add this to your list if you are teaching a class or a group about bats this year.

Washcloth Angel - Christmas in July!

Washcloth Angel

TerryGami, 15 Cloth Toy and Ornament Projects for Crafters, Teachers and Children

The book is now available in paperback!
The book is available at:

For the TerryGami washcloth angels, find the whitest washcloths you can find.  Some cloths can be a bit gray or dull.  You may be able to bleach them if they are, but I haven't tried it, so I can't recommend that yet. For smaller angels, use the 10" x 10" cloths.  The angels give a bright, heavenly accent to compliment the TerryGami reindeer, snowmen and Santa in the book.  If you are decorating the whole tree with TerryGami items, don't forget you can use the heart box as and ornament, too, and remember to put treats in it.

If you don't want to go to the expense of using a brass ring as the halo, you can use silver or gold metallic pipe cleaners for the halo. Dust the angel in fine glitter to give it extra sheen and sparkle.  Now there is glittered foam board and felt available, so rather than use sequins, you may want use the foam board and a small heart hole punch to make the hearts.

Washcloth Santa - Christmas in July!

TerryGami Washcloth Santa

TerryGami, 15 Cloth Toy and Ornament Projects for Crafters, Teachers, and Children
The book is now available in soft cover!

The book is available at:

The Santa ornament involves a bit more sculpting, more so than the other projects in the book, but it is worth the effort.  It can be made with any color washcloth to match your decor.  I have made mauve, burgundy and green Santas. To hang, just sew a loop gold or silver lamé or yarn or string through the top of the head, and then tie it off.  If you are looking for a project in the book that involves a bit more sewing, the Santa is the one.

Once children learn how to sew, they will want to use their new skills and wish there was more to sew.  The next book, coming soon, will have animals, fairies and gnomes and will give them something to show off their new skills.  By the way, they especially like to make the animals they have to stuff.

If a holiday party is traditional at your home, then make it special this year by making TerryGami party favors and ornaments with the kids this summer.  This will leave you time to concentrate on other details when the holiday arrives, and it will give the kids something to do on rainy days.  It never hurts to have a surprise project in the closet, ready to go when the sky clouds up.

When the TerryGami projects are finished, make packing the ornaments away special.  Have the children label and draw on the box.  For example, if they made Halloween decorations, have them draw bats and pumpkins on it with markers.  Have them write their names on white tissue paper, making a special layer for each child’s ornaments or party favor boxes. When it is time to decorate for the party, make opening the box a special event, too, by having them gather around to see what they have made.

I am all for moms enjoying Christmas, too.  That’s why I always love to hear people say they have Christmas ready by November.  This was something I always wanted to accomplish, but never quite achieved.  At least I did make it to the point that I wasn’t up all Christmas Eve, wrapping presents.  Can you imagine enjoying Thanksgiving dinner, knowing that Christmas is all wrapped up, and that you may actually be able to enjoy the holidays this year?

So, why not start planning the parties and get-togethers now?  Don’t wait for the last minute hustle and bustle.   Also, it doesn’t hurt to remind the kids that while, yes, fall means back-to-school; it also means the holidays are right around the corner!
