Welcome to Washcloth Crafts!

In honor of my friends who have boy grandchildren, the Boo Boo Boy Angel Instructions are available on Etsy, too!  Just tuck an ice cube in their tummies to soothe a child's boo boo.

The angels can be used as sachets. Just add a bag of potpourri in the tummy or skirt.  Of course, they can  be Christmas ornaments, too. Experiment with the facial features. Try small acrylic gems instead.

Moms and grand moms, consider making the angels for the young children in your lives or teach the older children how to make them. The angels are one cloth projects, which means with a package of 18 cloths, you can make them for a whole class of elementary and/or pre-school students. Now I know I am not the only craft nut who would do this, or am I?!  I think most would agree, kids are worth it!

See  Etsy for both the boy and girl Boo Boo Angel Instructions.

Welcome to washcloth crafts!

The new TerryGami book is now available online!  There are lots of fun new critters and dolls to make on a cold rainy afternoon.  Teach kids how to shape and sew items for gifts, ornaments, sachet, or to soothe a child's bumps and bruises.

This book contains both a pirate captain's parrot and a mate's parrot.  It has an entire gnome family along with a mushroom.  Hint: Think about what you might want to do with the little flaps under the mushroom's cap.  The daddy gnome doesn't need to be as old as he is, either.  There are many characters the other critters can be: leave it to your child's reading list to decide which critters to make.

The new Boo Boo Angel instructions are available on Etsy.  (See the link above.)  A Boo Boo Boy Angel is coming soon!

It is fun to see kids so proud their creations, or to watch them get excited while mom creates a new toy for them! With washcloth crafts the kids can take their new creation to bed with them!  Tuck in a little lavender potpourri inside the critter for sweet dreams!

Washcloth Crafts, Boo Boo Angel Instructions are now on Etsy!

Boo Boo Angel Instructions for Sale on Etsy for $1.50!

Link:
Etsy

New TerryGami  Boo Boo Angel Instructions are now available through the TerryGami Etsy shop for $1.50!

Like the Boo Boo Bunny, The Boo Boo  Angel is designed to hold a ice cube to soothe a child's bumps and bruises.  However, unlike the Bunny, the Angel will require a little sewing, a perfect way to start beginners to learn how to hand sew with washcloth crafts.

The angel is great for a gift exchanges for Scout troops or as a project for a children's hospital. It can be used as an angel on a Christmas tree or as a sachet to hang in a closet.  Just add potpourri to tulle or muslin bags to the wings and/or the tummy.  Perhaps consider using glittered purple foam board or felt, if using lavender potpourri.)

Purchase white washcloths in packages of 18 at discount department stores for $4. Make angels for the whole class!  There are many options for the facial features and trim at craft stores, so experiment with sequins, foam board, and acrylic gems.

The instructions also include a picture and tips of the angel and are sent in a PDF file, which will be emailed to you.

Welcome to washcloth crafts!

Hurray!!  The new book is now available on Amazon!  The cover picture is not up yet, but I have provided it on several sites, including this one.

The instructions are all in color, which I think is essential for clarity sake, not to mention the fact that our children have grown up with everything in color from TVs to computers.  There are factoid lists accompanying each critter to help facilitate group leaders, and mom or dad teachers. In the front of the book there are instructions on how to hand sew on terrycloth and party tips, as well as general information on working with washcloth crafts. Many of the critters can be glued with non-toxic, non-flammable fabric glue.

There is something to challenge every age group, and something for the little ones to do easily, too. Washcloth crafts may appear difficult at first glance, but once the kids make a few, they will only need to look at the illustrations to figure out how to make them.

I personally have a thing about bows and hearts, but you may want to leave them off, when using the critters as a Cub Scout or Boy Scout activity.  If you want to use ribbon, just tie it in a knot around the neck, or use twine for a more manly look.  For the tortoise, for example, use circles for eyes and triangles for the toes, instead of hearts. Viola! You have a boy tortoise!

I hope the kids have hours of fun making and playing with their new, handmade toys!

Welcome to washcloth crafts!

"TerryGami, Animals, Birds, and Gnomes" should be available online today or tomorrow! I will keep you posted or just try the Amazon link below.  It is set to be available in Canada, the UK, Australia, and Europe, as is the first book.See the cover below.

This book has instructions for a complete gnome family.  Gnomes and toadstools/mushrooms seem to go together, so there are instructions for a toadstool, too! Both the baby gnomes and the toadstool can serve a boo boo function, if you so desire. Just place an ice cube in the tummy of the baby gnome or in the stem of the mushroom to soothe a child's boo boo.

This book has two options for parrots, and they can be plain parrots or they can wear bandanas, hats, and earrings for pirate parties. Foam board skull and cross bones are available in craft stores, but I do provide a pattern to trace, if you want to make one out of felt for the parrot's pirate hat..  Whether you make a pirate parrot or a regular parrot, he can be attached to a costume or a T-shirt with Velcro(R) for dress up fun.

While this book doesn't have any holiday items, there are some critters that can be adapted for the holidays. The gnomes can be made into elves by giving them green clothing, green hats and pointed shoes. (A pattern for pointed shoes are on the last page of the book.) The hare can easily be turned into a pink or blue bunny for an Easter basket.  The bear can be turned into a Valentine's Day present by using red washcloths instead of brown.

The projects in this book can be used for group activities for the Boys and Girls Clubs, and Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops and other similar organizations. The group leader can demonstrate step by step how to make the critter as the children follow along. Start on the easy ones first, and build to the more labor intensive critters.

Homeschoolers can incorporate the TerryGami critters as a fun project for an end of the week treat or use them as an art projects during the week. In any case, there are a wide variety of projects to choose from in the new book.  Please have fun!!

Washcloth Crafts, Happy Valentine's Day!

Washcloth Heart Box
Washcloth Shamrock

Welcome to washcloth crafts!
The heart box project can be a project for anytime of year, so if you missed Valentine's Day, use them for birthday parties or even make red, white, and blue ones for the 4th of July.

Shamrocks are the next holiday project available in the first TerryGami book. Green washcloths are usually available in the 12 or 18 packs at Wal-Mart.  For smaller Shamrocks, cut the cloths down to 10" x 10".  (When you cut, see the Easter Egg instructions.)  Some of the cloths in the 12 packs are already 10" x 10".
The smaller sizes may be great for decorating garlands, wreaths and maybe even a shamrock tree, which can have harps and pots of  gold, too.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Washcloth Crafts, What Age to Start?

For the first (red) book below go to:
Barnes and Noble

Welcome to washcloth crafts!

If your child can roll a washcloth, wrap a rubber band around something, or tie a knot, he can easily make a TerryGami critter.  While it does involve a bit of manual dexterity, it is nothing that cannot be accomplished with a little patience and practice.  Like many crafts, a little practice makes all of the difference. Have them make the same critter a few times to see how they can perfect it.

If wrapping a rubber band is a bit difficult, try using string instead, if they can tie a knot, or use the tiny dreadlock rubber bands or orthodontic elastics, which now come in a wide array of colors. Match them to the washcloth, and the bands can hardly be seen.

If you think your children are far too young to sew, then choose critters that can be glued.  Many of the projects in both books can be glued or sewn.  Use paper bag clips or clamps to hold the body part together until it is dry or use rubber bands to do the job.  If you don't want the material to snag when you take them off, just cut the rubber bands off. However, terrycloth is very forgiving, any snags can be trimmed without damaging the material.

Terrycloth is great for kids to learn how to sew on because, if the thread matches the material, the stitches often cannot be seen at all, especially if the stitches are small. With a little shaping and molding of the critter, kids can usually have a good result on their first try making a critter. Start with easy ones and build up to the more challenging ones.

Blunt-end, wide-eyed needles are recommended for everyone to use.  The wide weave of the terrycloth allows everyone to use the blunt-end needles like yarn and darning needles.

Some of the TerryGami critters are a bit labor intensive.  Older children will appreciate the challenge, and the younger ones will be happy to have some easy critters to make. The new book, like the first book, offers a little something for every age.

It wasn't that long ago that kids were clamoring for little collectable animals sold in gift shops. Now they can get satisfaction from creating their own little critters.  They can choose the color and fashion the facial features, which can be just about anything from store bought items like acrylic gems or foam board, to natural  items they find in the backyard.  For a bow around the neck they can use ribbon or yarn or string or raffia, etc.

Children are so precocious today it is hard to put a finger on what age to start to teach them to sew.  I have seen a five year old sew with the help of his mother. They especially need help holding the material together as they sew, so consider using bag clamps for this, as well.

Welcome to washcloth crafts!!
While it is not customary for gnomes to be ostentatious, why not consider making the gnome's clothes of sparkle felt?  The facial features can be made of glittered foam board, too.  There are all kinds of gnomes, but why not create party gnomes? Why not create gnomes dressed for the Oscars?!  Hey, even gnomes can use a little sparkle in their lives!

By the way, the color of the hair and beard can be changed, just sew on loops yarn for both. If you use blonde yarn for the female gnome's hair, she will look a bit like a Dutch milk maid.

A word on the pedestals for the gnomes.  My original intent was just to make gnome dolls, but then I realized that some people may want to use them as decorations for a party or for a child's room, so I decided to offer instructions for a pedestal.  It is not too hard to make the gnomes to stand, but they do require a little extra help. I just discovered packages of small 12-inch long dowels in Wal-Mart's craft department next to the Popsicle sticks. Perfect!

I found it hard to match the colors of the washcloths with felt squares, but you can always go with a complimentary color if you prefer a felt hat for the female gnome or the baby gnomes, instead of  terrycloth.

Mushrooms go with gnomes and they can be any color, too. How about red and white mushroom for Valentine's Day? Use hearts for the spots.  This mushroom can be a boo boo mushroom, too, if you are so inclined. Just add an ice cube in the stem to soothe a child's boo boo.  The mushroom's spots can be made of felt, too, or other materials like foam board. Terrycloth and felt really look good together.

There are lots of ways to mix and match materials with washcloth crafts. The skirt and shirt for the gnomes or the mushroom cap or spots can be made of the same material as a child's bedspread, curtains, or throw pillows.  Let your imagination be your guide when experimenting with washcloth crafts!

Washcloth Crafts, Washcloth Parrots for Birthday Parties!

Captain's Pirate Parrot

 New book available online Now!

Welcome to washcloth crafts!
I  imagined what fun kids would have at a pirate birthday party or Halloween party, running around with parrots on their shoulders. This is what inspired the washcloth parrots.  The birthday boy or girl would get the captain's parrot and the other children would get the mate's parrot as a party favor.
Washcloth parrots might be a fun way to jazz up a lesson plan about the pirates of the Caribbean, too!  Factoids about parrots are already in the book. Or the parrots might just be fun to have in the kids' dress up box.
As a party activity, the parrots may be a bit labor intensive, so there will be a bit preparation work to do in advance to make it all run smoothly.  For example, make the feet and beaks ahead of time, and cut out the eye patch, bandanas, and ribbons.  Yarn or Craft Trim might be the cheaper way to go instead of using ribbon. The beaks and feet can be made of felt, also.

As in any craft for kids, a little prep work makes all the difference when planning a group activity!
Remember, too.  Parrots come in all colors!

 Arrgh! :)

The washcloth bear can be made with any color washcloth, of course.  A white bear with red accents can be a Valentine's Day gift.  Wal-Mart has packs of 18 washcloths for $4, which means you can make 6 bears with one package!  Use red acrylic gems or red glitter foam board for the facial feature and tie a red ribbon or yarn bow around the neck.

The heart boxes can be white, too.  Just decorate with red hearts and dots made with hole punches, and other fun foam board cutouts, or acrylic gems.

There are many things to use as treats in the boxes.  Small plastic toys like rings, decorative erasers, candy, fake tattoos, toy bracelets or necklaces. A very small toy car may fit, too.

Decorate a branch with hearts for a Valentine's Day tree.  Several bears can hang on the branches like koala bears!  Let's hope the new book will be available before Valentine's Day.  If not, maybe next year.  This year an Easter tree may have to due; hang baby chicks and Easter Eggs for the decorations. See the blog below.

Washcloth Crafts, Gnome Babies

         Washcloth Baby Gnome

Washcloth Baby Gnome

Meanwhile, here is a sneak preview of the Gnome Babies.

Welcome to washcloth crafts!

Gnome Babies can be any color, but since folklore tells us that they are born as twins, one boy and one girl, I made them of pink and blue washcloths for the new book. The hair color can be any color, too.  (Don't forget about the Craft Trim, which is cheaper than buying a skein of yarn for just a few small pieces of yarn.)

The gnome babies can also be Boo Boo Gnomes.  Just put an ice cube in its tummy to soothe a child's boo boo. Treats can be tucked inside, as well, for a party favor.

If using the baby gnomes for a party activity, save time by putting together the body structures and let the kids sew up the arms, especially if you are teaching them to sew, too. The sides of the body can be sewn or left open. You can incorporate felt hands, too, if you wish. Don't forget, you can use blunt-end needles that are easy to thread. I like to use darning needles, but plastic needles can be used, too. The wide weave of the terrycloth allows for the use of blunt-end needles.

Another option is to make the hats a head of time, and then let the kids make the body.  This way they learn how to make the babies. The hats can be made of felt, but sometimes it is hard to match the color of the felt with the washcloth. A washcloth hat work just fine. The jingle bell on the top it optional. You can use a pom-pom instead or nothing at all.  Googly eyes can be used, too, or use a hole punch to make foam board eyes. Use the glitter foam board to jazz them up a bit. I like to snip a piece off the bottom of the circle for the eyes.

Don't forget, each critter comes with factoids!  This allows you to have a mini lesson along with the sewing lesson.  There are 12 new projects in the new book.  See the front cover for nine of them.

The gnome babies can be elf babies; just use green washcloths.

See the first book below.
