Washcloth Crafts!
Graduation Owl was the first critter I ever made over 20 years ago for my boys’ kindergarten classes.  What is nice about the owl is that it can be used as a treat or a money holder as well as a Boo Boo Owl. Treats can be a candy kiss or a plastic toy.  The owl itself can stand alone as a gift.  I suppose one could use a little Velcro to keep the opening closed to prevent anything, like money, from falling out.   The owl doesn’t necessarily require any sewing, unless you want to sew up the front and back of the body.  Even that is optional.

As I said in the Tips, if you are making them for a whole classroom, start early cutting out the various parts, and then assemble the owls all at once. (See the link at the top of the page.)  Make some extra ones for siblings and friends, if you have extra cloths.  Remember, kids like a variety of colors, if you can’t find tan cloths, although Wal-Mart almost always has tan cloths.  They have cloths in various parts of the store, too, like house wares and by the mops and cleaners.  Sometimes they have a special display with the cloths in the spring and fall.  If you can’t find red for the Teacher’s Boo Boo Apple, any relatively thin, borderless washcloths will do.

Over the years, it has been hit and miss with the different colors.  Hopefully, TerryGami will catch on and the stores will start supplying the beautiful colors I have collected over the years.  I was so thrilled one year when Wal-Mart started selling a package of  fall colors, which happened to be perfect for the turkey.  I had hoped they would come out with Christmas colors that year, too, but no such luck, although white and green are always available and red sometimes, too.  Over the years, I have managed to collect every color in the rainbow.  Black is the only color I haven’t seen yet in the bundles.  Check out other discount department stores. They usually have a bundle of either washcloths or utility cloths for $3 or $4 a bundle with 12 to 18 cloths per bundle.

Something handmade always has a little more meaning than something purchased at a store.

It’s time to get ready for Graduation Day!

Happy crafting!
~Terry
